It’s been building for a while – the fashion moment where showing off your lacy bra or underwear band is hot shit. When your crop top counts as a IRL top, because celebs/fashion designers/the internet says so. It’s a great time to be alive, folks.
Only thing is – this trend can be tricky. You want to look like you’ve intentionally flashed your bra or underwear, not like you’re having a wardrobe malfunction.
START OFF EASY
If running out in a lacy bra is giving you heart palpitations, ease yourself into this trend by popping a sexy one under a sheer shirt, or letting the scalloped edges peek out over a low cut singlet. It’s super hot but won’t have you feeling self-conscious if you’ve never tried the trend before. If you’re low on pretty bras, this Calvin Klein triange bra is babe’n.
FLASH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SKIN
Look – we will never judge anyone who wants to go all-out when it comes to sexy skin flashing. You do you. But if you want to nail the underwear-as-outerwear trend in the painfully chic way of, say, Emily Ratajkowski, there are rules that apply.
Basically, it’s that age-old “rule” of keeping the sexy in one area. Emily’s gone for a cute bra (well, it’s kind of a bikini but same-same) with loose mom jeans – but you could also make this work by wearing a short corset with jeans over the bottom half, or even a sheer maxi skirt. Basically – keep the minis and booty shorts for the club (and by all means werk ’em there for sure).
MAKE IT AN OUTFIT
If you want to turn your undies into legit clothes, you need to properly curate an outfit. It doesn’t work if you just throw on any jeans with your Calvin Klein crop top and call it a day. Accessorising is key, or going for a “vibe” – overalls over that crop top, for example, gives off major 90’s nostalgic feels.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF AN UNDIES BAND
Okay, okay – let’s not hold Justin Bieber up as the pinnacle of fashion. But you’ve gotta admit there’s something uber-sexy about an undies band juuuuust peeking over the top of some shorts on a dude. Or a girl. Really, on anyone. This isn’t a look for any occasion, but if you’re hitting up a casual bbq you can make the shirtless thing work. Just team your Calvin’s with sport-luxe track shorts over say, cargo pants ok?
CORSETS WORK HARD
If you’re game to risk the potential nip-slip (but like, free the nipple amirite?) go invest in a seriously major corset or bodysuit. They work casually (look at babetown Hailey here) with jeans and minimal makeup, but then make for ridiculously epic evening wear if you team ’em with black skinny denim, or a leather mini.
