A Queensland police dog has died today in the line of duty.
Waco, an 8-year-old member of the Brisbane police service, was in Deception Bay on the trail of a suspect who had fled from a stolen car when his handler noticed him become unsteady on his feet.
Recognising the signs of heat stress, his handler quickly took him to a vet, but despite attempts to rehydrate the dog and lower his body temperature, Waco died early this morning.
Waco’s handler, a senior constable, is reportedly devastated by the loss of his partner. Condolences from the public are pouring in to the QPS Facebook page:
If there’s a better reason to campaign for our global leaders to start doing something about the rapidly heating climate than saving our dogs – who we can all agree are furry angels who we just do not deserve – then I can’t think of it.
RIP Waco. Good dog. Good boy.
