Naomi Campbell has revealed that she was the victim of a frightening attempted robbery in Paris in 2012, likening her experience to the attack suffered by Kim Kardashian in the city last October.
The model spoke about the attack for the first time during a recent appearance on The Wendy Williams Show, saying that she kept it quiet until this point because she did not want the media attention.
The subject came up during a discussion of Karashian’s hair, because of course it did, and Cambpell said that she is able to “sympathise” with her friend because they went through similar experiences.
“They followed me from the airport,” she told Williams, explaining how the attempted robbery unfolded. “They attacked me – they opened my car door and said ‘Naomi Campbell, we’re going to kill you.’”
She had just flown to Paris from Switzerland to visit her friend and “papa”, designer Azzedina Alaia, and says that she didn’t take security with her because it was going to be a “quick trip.”
She said that she became suspicious upon seeing the car at the airport – there was an unfamiliar driver in the vehicle, which smelled of “weird perfume”, and the windows were rolled down in spite of the “freezing cold” weather.
On arrival near Alaia’s home, Cambpell says that the attempted robbers opened her car door and attempted to steal her belongings.
She was faced with a split-second decision: “Am I going to let this guy take my bag with all my passports, or am I going to fight for it?” she said. “And my decision was, I’m not letting my bag go.”
Campbell said that he was saved when Alaia came out of his home and intervened, and went on to claim that the driver was “in on it”, and that she knows of various other unnamed celebrities who have had similar experiences in recent years.
“It’s a whole ring that’s been happening for a few years now. So I very much sympathise with [Kardashian], and I felt for her right away. And I hated hearing these stories that it wasn’t true. It was absolutely true and it happened to me.”
