Melb Woman Raped Shortly After Begging Fellow Tram Passengers For Help

Christ, this is something else. ‘Bystander effect’ is well and truly alive.

A Melbourne woman was raped yesterday morning, shortly after begging her fellow tram passengers for help.

Victoria Police say the woman was travelling on the Collins Street tram between 5am and 5:25am yesterday, when a man – a fellow passenger – allegedly began to touch and assault her.

The woman disembarked at the St Vincent’s Plaza tram stop on Victoria Parade. The man followed her, and it’s then that police allege the sexual assault occurred.

A 49-year-old Flemington man was arrested yesterday evening, and charged with offences including rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, assault and false imprisonment. He was due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court today.

Police are appealing for anyone on the tram who may witnessed the woman – who was wearing a gold or yellow dress at the time – or the man to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
