Lorde Scores Her First Vogue Australia Cover, Talks Breakups And Monobrows

Your girl Lorde has scored her first ever Vogue Australia cover, looking floaty and ethereal as hell on the front of the October issue, and has taken to social media to show off the glamorous shots and celebrate the ascendancy of her eyebrow hair.

“It’s literally fucked that I could be on the cover of Vogue,” she wrote to her 5.8 million Twitter followers, “I used to get called monobrow at school that BROW IS ON COVER OF VOGUE.” Yes it is, mate, and we couldn’t be more proud.

In the accompanying interview, the singer spoke about her break-up from photographer boyfriend James Lowe, and how that tumultuous period in her life completely altered her worldview when she was working on her second album, Melodrama.

She told Vogue:

I basically turned 19 and the world was like: “Alright, we’re going to toss everything up in the air and it’s all going to come down in a really crazy way.” All of a sudden I moved out of home, I went through a break-up. It felt like every day and every night I was totally having my mind blown by all these new things. I really felt like a young adult for the first time, kind of socially … That period was so creative I just was like: “Oh, my God.” I just couldn’t write it all down fast enough. So that’s very much what the record centred around.

She went on to say that the writing of the album was punctuated by heavy amounts of partying and tequila:

The whole time I was writing it I was going out a lot, I was partying a lot, I was going to a lot of shows. I wanted to just be dancing all the time. It was almost like I just want to make the stuff that I want to dance to on Saturday or whatever, which was a super-new thing for me. I think as you do grow up, you go through a break-up and be like: “I just don’t want to think about it and I want to drink tequila and dance to Nelly Furtado.”

Those are entirely valid life choices right there.

Lorde was photographed in Sydney by Nicole Bentley and styled by Vogue’s senior fashion editor Kate Darvill. Her issue is on sale Monday September 25.
