A Teary Lorde Busted Out A Whitney Houston Cover To Celebrate The Yes Vote

Last night, Lorde played the first of her two Sydney shows at the Opera House forecourt, and by all accounts it was a magical evening filled with a nice wholesome vibe that ran like electricity through the air. That’s the power of Lorde (and Lorde fans).

At one point – shortly before playing ‘Liability‘, when she was having a bit of a yarn with the crowd – Lorde congratulated Australia on voting yes to marriage equality.

“Congrats on passing same-sex marriage, by the way!” she said, and look, nobody correct her, okay? It’s a nice thought and Lorde has been a bit too busy with her tour and whatnot to understand the ins-and-outs of our dumb postal vote.

Somebody threw a rainbow flag up on stage, and she broke into a spontaneous rendition of Whitney Houston‘s classic, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody‘ (those are the opening notes of ‘Liability’ in the background).

“I’m very proud of you,” said an emotional Lorde.

“You look like you’re gonna cry!” yelled someone in the crowd.

“This is the crying show, I don’t know if you know that,” she replied.

Can Australia please adopt her already? BTW, Lorde is playing another Sydney show tonight if you were lucky enough to get tickets / can somehow convince someone to sell you their’s.
