Karl Lagerfeld + Grand Theft Auto?

Seeing as I am an avid follower of both fashion AND gaming it came as quite a surprise to learn that Karl Lagerfeld (yes you read that correctly) will feature in the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto due out on the 29th of April…

Lagerfeld’s video game self (pictured) will not feature as a playable character, but will instead man the decks on one of the game’s fabricated radio stations. Granted it would of been hilarious to see Lagerfeld as a seedy mob boss (the real cashmere mafia perhaps? ROFL), or part of a gun toting fashion police arresting people for heinous crimes against fashion… Or maybe not.

As is obvious to anyone who’s seen the Lagerfeld doco, the man loves music and would have no shortage of tunes to choose from (he has like a million Ipods, and has also released a compilation CD of his favourite music). From the man himself: “They are the games of our times. Those games in a way changed the world…. They had written a politically incorrect dialogue… I loved it, [particularly] in a time when everybody wants to be so politically correct when they talk… “I prefer to be in a video than to play with it. I would love to be a very nasty, politically incorrect character.”

This partnership is so delightfully left of field that the premise of stoners listening to Karl Lagerfeld sound bytes in their parent’s basement makes me feel warm inside. Hopefully he slips in a few trademark Karl-isms, my favourite being “pissing everywhere isn’t very Chanel” he’s just a book of knowledge that man.

If the highly unlikely collaboration between gaming and fashion continues, we can think of a few suggestions for notable fashion designers who should be characters in video games. Marc Jacobs, like Tony Montana, is highly ambitious and a maverick, though I doubt he’s ever asked anyone to “say hello to his little friend”. This is pretty harsh and it pains me to even put this up (sorry Alber I actually love what you do with Lanvin and think you’re immensely talented) but is Alber Elbaz and The Penguin one in the same? Has anyone seen them at the same place at the same time? Just throwing it out there…
