The hashtag may be coming to a status update near you with Facebook rumoured to be considering pinching Twitter’s iconic trend marker.
While the move is in part, an open attack against Twitter, it would also make sense. The renewed focus on customised content delivery to users would benefit greatly from an improved ability to organise conversations based on the topic. Facebook-owned Instagram already uses the hashtag for this reason.
Unfortunately, this means your annoying self-absorbed friend’s smug I just did something vaguely decent with my life #winning posts will probably get more mileage with the self-congratulatory staple an inevitable trender. AND you won’t be able to retort “hashtags don’t work on Facebook, dickhead” anymore either.
