Earlier this morning, Sydney broke its near-three week streak of non-stop heat to open the heavens and flood the hell out of the city. Maseratis were drowned. Drains were fucked. And over in Marrickville, 17 people were evacuated from an apartment building after the damn thing threatened to collapse.
Yep, the NSW State Emergency Service had to evacuate residents from the Ewart Street building after the torrential rain made the whole thing worryingly unstable.

“A couple of trees have lost their footing at the back of this building, and they’ve fallen into an old brick pit, taking some of the ground with them. That’s left only a couple metres of ground between the brick pit and the actual footings of the building,” said Acting Superintendent Don Pescud.
He said that engineers had so far found no damage, “but if the wash away had continued at the rate that it was there were fears that the building would collapse. The threat has been averted because the rain stopped.”
Most residents were evacuated anyway as a precaution, but should hopefully be able to return tonight.
Man just walked into apartment block carrying case of VB beer. Looks like in for the long haul #Marrickville
