Richie Benaud Hospitalised After Car Crash

Australia’s grandad (and possibly the only reason to ever watch televised cricket) Richie Benaud has been hospitalised suffering a broken sternum, as well as chest and shoulder injuries, following a minor car crash in Sydney yesterday. Benaud told Channel Nine “No one else was injured … I was more worried about the car than myself”. Marvellous comment, that. Benaud is expected to remain in hospital for two weeks, with Nine CEO David Gyngell saying “Richie will return to call the coming Ashes series against England – his 36th summer in Nine’s Wide World of Sports commentary box – when he is good and ready,” and added that “Richie is a national treasure… in the Nine family, he sits at the head of the table.”
