501 Richie Benauds Gathered To Honour The Great Man At The SCG Today

Australia lost a dear, dear friend in Richie Benaud last April, when the much beloved icon passed away at the age of 84.

An irreplaceable cornerstone of both cricket and broadcasting – at home, and abroad – the reverence the general public had for Benaud was unrivalled, unparalleled, and unprecedented. Truly, there were barely any with a bad word to say about the former Australian Test captain.
And as Benaud’s native Sydney Test moved into its second day’s play – the first test at the ground since Richie’s passing – there was no better tribute to the great man himself than the annual mob of Richies.
Over the past few years, the mob of absolute legends has made habit of arriving en masse to the SCG dressed to the nines in Richie’s signature cream/bone/white/off-white/ivory/beige suit jacket and Channel Nine Microphone.
This year’s observance of Richie Day took on a significance like never before.
501 – FIVE HUNDRED AND ONE – legit champions from all walks of life converged on the ground to partake in the rain-affected days play, and salute an icon.
Fittingly, the game paused to remember Benaud, right as the clock struck 2:22pm.

Seriously, would you just look at this pack of bloody champions?

And despite the heavily rain-affected day, the group had no trouble keeping themselves amused.

The 501 number was no accident, either. It’s the sum total of Richie’s test number (190), the number of test matches he played for Australia (63), and the number of wickets he took for his country (248).

Bless you, you impeccably dressed angels. Richie, in his own inimitable style, would have loved it.
