Melb’s Own Roller Derby ‘All Stars’ Charge Into World Champs As #1 Seed

Well holy shit, the Victorian Roller Derby League‘s All Stars are sitting very pretty on top of the ladder in the Womens Flat Track Derby Association following the playoffs in Dallas last month.

This is the first time ever that the VRDL team has been the #1 seed in the international rankings – beating out the 2015 & 2016 champions, Rose City Rollers, and the champs before that – Gotham Girls Roller Derby.

Sitting at the top of the ladder with nine wins, one loss, and a total score of 1202.77, this is also the first time that an Australian womens derby team has fought their way to the top of the table.

It’s a good place to be for the All Stars, as the 2017 Championships are set to go down over in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 3rd, 4th 5th.

As it stands, the All Stars will begin with Game Five in the second elimination round, facing up against the winner of the first elimination game between Canada‘s Montréal Roller Derby and Sweden‘s Crime City Rollers.

If you’re not too sure about how flat track roller derby works then think back to that time you watched ‘Whip It’, and forget everything you learned from that because that’s banked track anyway. Instead, watch this very informative clip from Johannesburg‘s C-Max Roller Derby League.

Good luck and skate hard, VRDL All Stars. I am one excited former roller derby player right now.
