The cool thing about big wave surfing is that it’s basically equivalent to running down the vertical face of a collapsing building both in terms of sheer exhilaration and the extremely high chance that you will die incredibly violently. Despite the risks of literally exploding, then drowning, then exploding again, there are still people who will risk life and limb to surf big-ass waves, and I have no choice but to respect it.
Surf officials have confirmed that Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa officially smashed the record for the highest wave ever surfed. Koxa took on an 80ft (24.4-metre) wave, which is roughly equivalent to jumping in front of a bus for kicks. Big ups to you, Rodrigo.

Though Koxa surfed the wave off the coast of Nazare, Portugal all the way back in November, it wasn’t until the World Surf League‘s Big Wave Awards on Saturday night that he has been officially commended for it. Turns out it takes a little bit of legwork to determine exactly how big a wave actually was, which may or may not include quizzing your mate Trav who reckons he surfed a 100m wave once but didn’t get any footage of it because his GoPro was “playing up.”
I’ve boogie boarded some four footers in my time. Know the thrill.
