An Australian NFL Player Has Been Charged With Rape By US Police

Police in the United States have formally charged Australian NFL player Adam Gotsis with rape, stemming from an alleged incident that occurred in 2013.

Gotsis, a Defensive End who currently plays for the Denver Broncos, turned himself in to police in Atlanta after a woman went to police on February 1st and filed the accusations.

It is alleged that Gotsis met the unidentified woman at a party on March 9th, 2013. The police report states that the victim asserts Gotsis “placed his penis in her vagina against her will” after taking her to his home between 11:00pm and 11:30pm that night.

The report does not identify Gotsis by name, but spokespeople for both Gotsis and Atlanta area police confirmed he was the subject of the accusations and charges.

Police obtained a warrant for Gotsis’ arrest last Wednesday, and the 25-year-old turned himself into police. He posted bail and was subsequently released later that day.

Gotsis was born and raised in Melbourne, and took up American football in 2005 at the age of 13. After representing Australia at the IFAF World Championship in 2013, he signed on to play college football with Georgia Tech. It is during his tenure with the Yellow Jackets that the assault was alleged to have taken place. He was taken by the Broncos in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Representatives for Gotsis have asserted he is innocent of the charges, issuing a short statement to media earlier today.

Although the incident in question allegedly occurred more than five years ago, Adam first learned of these shocking allegations last month. We immediately reached out to law enforcement and have proactively cooperated with all aspects of the investigation while maintaining communication with the team.

While we were disappointed to learn of the turn the investigation was taking, we steadfastly maintain that the allegations are false.

We will continue to advocate strongly for Adam’s innocence.

Broncos management issued a statement confirming they were aware of Gotsis’ arrest, and were monitoring the investigation with the NFL closely as it develops.

The Broncos take an accusation of this nature very seriously and will continue to closely monitor the legal proceedings. This issue was promptly reported to the NFL as soon as we learned of it, and we will remain in communication with the league office regarding this matter.

The investigation remains ongoing.
