One of the vehicles burst into flames, and police closed all lanes of the Princes Highway south of Sussex Inlet as a result.
The three people who died were from two separate vehicles, and paramedics treated two women for serious injuries including possible head injuries, according to an ambulance spokesman. One woman was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital, the other to St George Hospital, and both are in critical condition.
One lane has just been re-opened at around 2pm, but police are encouraging people to use a different route other than the Princes Highway in that area, or to avoid the area entirely. The highway will remain partly closed for several hours.
If you’re on the highway, diversions are in place – drivers heading north have been asked to use the Kings Highway and Braidwood-Nowra Road, while southbound traffic should use the Braidwood-Nowra Road and then Kings Highway.
