Northern Territory Man Dies In Police Custody

A man has died in police custody overnight in Darwin.

The 59-year-old man was taken into custody around 6pm on Thursday night. During a routine cell check just after 9pm, the man was found to be unresponsive.

Upon arrival at the scene, St Johns Ambulance paramedics confirmed the death, as did the watch house nurse in attendance.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, although a full investigation for the coroner is underway.

“Police are currently investigating the death in custody on behalf of the coroner and therefore no further details will be provided at this time,” said Commander Michael Murphy.

At this stage it is unclear why the man was brought into police custody. The ABC are reporting that it was for “alcohol offences”, but Darwin police have yet to confirm or deny this report.
