31-Year-Old Indigenous Man Found Dead In Northern Territory Police Custody

An Indigenous man has been found dead while in custody this morning.

The 31-year-old was found by officers at Darwin Correction Centre just before 6.30am. He did not respond to resuscitation attempts made by correctional officers.

Northern Territory Police understand the man took his own life, and are investigating the circumstances before preparing a report for the coroner.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was being held in remand at the low-security facility and was awaiting trial.

NT Department of Correctional Services have not yet released any further details.
His death comes just over a month after the death in NSW Police custody of 36-year-old Indigenous woman Rebecca Maher, and amid intense scrutiny of the Territory’s treatment of juvenile detainees.
