Man Dies In Police Custody After Alleged Assault On Melbourne Bar Patrons

Melbourne, Police Custody, Elsternwick

A Melbourne man has died in police custody after an incident at a bar in Elsternwick in the early hours of this morning, during which several patrons were allegedly assaulted.

Victoria Police say that officers were called to the venue on Glenhuntly Road at around 2.15am, and arrived to find a man being “held down by a number of people.”

The man was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody when he lost consciousness, and police attempted to revive him before Ambulance Victoria officers took over.

Despite their efforts, the man, who has yet to be formally identified, died at the scene, and it is expected that a postmortem investigation will determine his cause of death.

Police did not name the venue, but various reports have identified it as the popular Antique Bar.

The bar’s owner has reportedly spoken with homicide detectives today, as all deaths in custody are investigated by the Homicide Squad with oversight from the Professional Standards Command.
