Nancy Pelosi, the United States‘ top-ranking Democrat and subject of a recent meme, says her party has no immediate plans to back impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump because “he’s just not worth it.”

Speaking to The Washington Post about launching extreme measures to remove Trump from the White House before the 2020 election, the House Speaker said it’s just too risky to try without slam-dunk evidence of wrongdoing.
“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country,” Pelosi said.
“And he’s just not worth it.”
There have been rumblings of impeachment proceedings against Trump for ages, and several Democrats have already taken a crack at setting the thing off.
Those attempts have all fallen short of securing the necessary party backing.
It might not be that way forever, though.
Pelosi’s comments come before the arrival of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation into the Trump campaign’s potential collusion with Russian operatives and subsequent obstruction of justice.
If that report finds Trump’s campaign worked with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election and worked to cover the whole thing up afterwards, there’s every chance Democrats would seize the opportunity to turf Trump out.
They’re digging for stuff on their own, too. The House Judiciary Committee, which would take the lead on any serious attempt to impeach Trump, last week revealed they had sent 81 document requests to Trump-related individuals and entities to identify any impeachable offences.
Make no mistake, Pelosi used the same interview to express her viewpoint that Trump is fundamentally unfit to hold the office – but at this rate, we’re all looking at Trump sticking it out until 2020. At least.
