In what will surely be the first of many such attempts, a Democratic representative from California has introduced an article of impeachment against Donald Trump.
Brad Sherman‘s impeachment article alleges that Trump has obstructed justice during the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. It’s the first time anyone has attempted this – and it comes as Democrats ponder whether pursuing impeachment is a wise move at all.
Spoiler alert: as long as the Republican Party control the House of Representatives – which they very much do – it is not a wise move at all, as it will not pass. It’s showboating, and a way to maybe psych the President out a lil’ bit.
The article of impeachment points to Trump’s diring of FBI director James Comey as Trump’s primary act of obstruction of justice.
In all of this, Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.
Sherman says he wants “to begin a long process to protect our country from abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and impulsive, ignorant incompetence.”
Most other Democrats aren’t that keen on this, and the rank-and-file, for the most part, are more interested in fighting Trump’s agenda than harebrained schemes to eject him from office.
Though – as The Hill points out – it might end up serving some purpose: it could force everyone in the House to lay their cards on the table. Everyone would be on the record as to whether they think he should be impeached or not.
Well. It’s a thing, anyway.
