Man Charged Over Bashing Assault Of Transgender Musician In Newtown

A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the bashing assault of transgender musician Stephanie McCarthy at Sydney’s Newtown Town Hall over the weekend.
McCarthy, 43, was preparing to play a show with her band at the Town Hall on Saturday night when a group of young men began following her around, yelling “faggot” and becoming physically aggressive.
The situation escalated, and about an hour later, McCarthy says she was held down and bashed. Subsequent to the attack, she Tweeted out the following photo, showing her injuries: 

NSW Police say that the 23-year-old was arrested on Tuesday afternoon at Newtown Police Station, and has been charged with affray. Conditional bail has been granted, and he will appear in court on July 9.
Police reports indicate that two men were involved in the assault, in which McCarthy’s hair was pulled, and she was punched in the face. Anyone who can provide any additional information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
