In case you missed the very important, hot cultural news on the weekend, Sydney decided to one-up Melbourne (again) and got itself its very own giant mural of a famous person, courtesy of artist Scott Marsh.
That masterpiece is some eight-metres high, and lies on Teggs Lane in Chippendale, just by Ziggy’s Art Wine & Cheese Bar. But perhaps you already know this. Perhaps you are one of the many, many people currently recreating the Kanye on Kanye pose.
Marsh told PEDESTRIAN.TV that people had been lining up to take photos of it every since the OG photo got 2million hits on Reddit and “then after that it just blew up”.
“I went down there [to Chippendale] yesterday for a friend’s birthday,” he said. “There were constant streams of people in the alleyway, taking photos with it.
“They were posing, copying the pose, or doing some other pose. Or posing with their dogs.”
He reckons there was about 10, 12 people there at any one time, taking photos like this:

So popular is the artwork that it blew up Scott’s Insta by about 2,000 followers, and it’s going up by another ten every minute.
“It just keeps going,” he said. “It’s really cool, but strange, probably because out of everything I’ve ever painted, it’s probably the least amount of effort I’ve ever put into a painting. It took me about four hours, it was a very last minute kind of thing.”
Has it been defaced yet?
“Not yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they [rando people with spray paint] did, it’s just getting so much attention. People seem to either love Kanye or absolutely hate Kanye, same as Kim Kardashian.”
So which camp does he fall into?
“Oh, I love Kanye. I reckon he’s awesome.”
Same.
