Have Mercy: There’s An Algorithm That Can Tell When You’re Drunk-Tweeting

Call us crazy, but we’re willing to bet that a bunch of you awaken on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and frantically check what level of horrible shame you should feel for the ridiculous photos and opinions you shared on Twitter the night before.

Well, you’re not alone, friendo.
The University from Rochester in the US did a study in which a group of computer scientists analysed over 11,000 drunk tweets (oh god, what a tedious task), and enlisted the help of Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for qualitative analysis to determine if the tweet was sent at the same time the tweeter was drinking.
It uses time, place, and content (particularly the words used) to be able to identify your drunk tweets. This includes words like ‘couch’, ‘pong’, ‘hammered’, and ‘my mom’ (for some reason).
From this data, the team was able to devise an algorithm that picks on on whether your tweet happened when you were drunk or not.
Apparently, this study and algorithm was made to help local councils devise policies around alcohol and public health.
“Our results demonstrate that tweets can provide powerful and fine-grained cues of activities going on in cities,” said study author Nabil Hossain.
But also, it would be a super handy way to laugh at lots of drunk dickheads on the Internet. Well done, Internet!
