VIC Gun Club Shut Down After Bullet Allegedly Strays Into Adjacent Go-Kart Track

The first time I ever fired a gun was on Mother’s Day in 2015. I was in Texas and an American friend of mine said that, since I was in America, it was a thing we should do. The safety briefing consisted of a man telling us to always point it down range, never point it at each other, and to make sure to not have our thumb sticking up when we fired the pistol because it would take that thumb clean off. The only other time the man spoke to us was when he asked us if we wanted to fire an AK-47.

While their approach to safety might not have been incredible as it pertained to putting firearms in the hands of a very hungover Australian, one of the strengths of this place was that the whole thing was basically a giant concrete bunker. The many, many shots I missed because I am terrible at ~gun~ didn’t, oh, just as an example, get fired into a nearby go-kart track.

According to 3AW, a shooting club in Port Melbourne has been temporarily shut down by police after a bullet from the club was allegedly found in a go-kart track adjacent.

3AW mornings host Neil Mitchell said that the station received two separate tips pertaining to the stray bullet. Upon sending their police reporter, Pat Mitchell, to the Melbourne International Shooting Club, they found a police notice indicating that the range had been shut down “following a report from the member of the public” and pending investigation.

Police told AAP that they had been unable to find evidence of a bullet in the go-kart complex, but because the complaint had been made, they would continue to investigate.

According to the Herald Sun, three adults and a teenager reported hearing a gunshot and the whistle of a bullet passing overhead at around midday yesterday, at a time when three people were firing 9mm rounds at the shooting club.

Inspector Justin Goldsmith told reporters today that it seemed unlikely that a bullet from the shooting club could make it into the go-kart complex, and Go Kart Club of Victoria president John Wall told AAP it would be “impossible” for that to happen, adding that he had “no idea” where it could have come from.
