Donald Glover Is Officially The First Black Comedy Director To Win An Emmy

Donald Glover has just become the first black director to win a Primetime Emmy for helming a comedy series, thanks to his game-changing series Atlanta.

The absolute dude received the gong for the his work on B.A.N., an experimental bottle episode wedged in the middle of the show’s first season.

Taking to the podium, Glover took the opportunity to give props to Hiro Murai, who has overseen direction for much of the series.

That’s just one of six Emmys that Atlanta is up for, and you could reasonably expect Glover’s hit to pick up at least one more out of best comedy, best actor in a comedy, best directing for a comedy and best writing for a comedy (where Atlanta is nominated twice).

Notably, the award was presented by comedy heavyweight Dave Chappelle, and people have taken notice of that history-making moment:

Definitely expect to see more of this in the seasons to come.
