Hollywood star and all-round legend Daniel Kaluuya just won the BAFTA Rising Star award, the only BAFTA that the public votes for, for his outstanding performance in last year’s Get Out.
And we’re super happy for him, honestly we are. We’re just also crying a little bit, because his acceptance speech was like… really, really sweet.
The 28-year-old Brit ran through a laundry list of your standard thank-yous, before getting into the really important shit:
I am a product of arts funding in the UK. I want to thank people who support that, mainstream arts and grass roots levels. Thank you for letting me think different.
After noticing the countdown clock starting to usher him off stage (“There’s a countdown – I wasn’t supposed to say that but I’ve said it now, we break all the rules!“), he got to the best bit: thanking his mum.
Mum – you’re the reason why I started, why I’m here, you’re the reason I keep going. This is yours.
