It appears that, in the wake of a wave of allegations of sexual assault and harassment in Hollywood, the response du jour of those accused of misconduct is to check themselves into a very special rehab clinic for sex addiction: celebrity rehab centre The Meadows.
Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey have both reportedly checked in to the Arizona clinic after being accused of rape, harassment and general sex-pestery, although Weinstein is said to have only lasted a week of the customary 45 days.
Tiger Woods is also believed to have undergone treatment for sex addiction at The Meadows in 2010, alongside a long list of other celebrity graduates, including Selena Gomez, Elle Macpherson, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
The 35-acre former ranch an hour outside of Phoenix treats a whole laundry list of high-end ailments, from eating disorders and gambling addictions to codependency, love avoidance, and (obviously) sex addiction. So notorious is it for its treatment of central players in sex scandals that it’s come to be known by detractors as ‘sex addict boot camp’.
Despite the fact that it looks luxe as hell, former patients have described the facility as “quite a shock” – they have to share rooms, line up for the toilet, and all drugs and alcohol are banned, along with caffeine and sugar. There’s a dress code to minimise triggers for people being treated for sex addiction. One ex-patient told The Telegraph, “When you wake up in the morning and have to wait in a line to use the bathroom, you think: this is what jail would be like.”
Of course, this high-end psychiatric play-jail doesn’t come cheap. A full 45-day treatment will set you back nearly $60,000 for the privilege.
Whether or not people like Weinstein and Spacey actually need to be treated for sex addiction is another story. Do they have a rehab program for being incorrigible assholes with no respect for the people around them? Here’s hoping.
