Campbell Newman Calls A Snap Queensland Election

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has officially visited Government House in Brisbane today, asking Acting Governor Tim Carmody to deliver the writs for a snap state election, which will take place on January 31st – two months ahead of schedule.

The embattled Liberal National Party leader faces an uphill battle to retain his own seat of Ashgrove, whilst opinion polls put the QLD Government in a neck-and-neck race with the opposition Labor party, headed up by party leader Annastacia Palaszczuk.
The polls represent a remarkable turnaround in fortune for the Labor party, who were unceremoniously dumped from power in the March 2012 election – the LNP won in an epic landslide, claiming 78 of 89 total seats.
Widespread cuts to the public sector have lead the Union movement to conduct heavy campaigning against Newman and the LNP Government. Whilst tough crackdowns have lead the Government to claim a drop in gang-related activity.
With both of those in mind, the Courier Mail has already gone on the offensive for the LNP, running with this nugget of journalistic gold for its front cover today.

No matter the outcome of the election, the winds of change are certainly blowin’ up Queensland way. Bring it on.
