Brussels Enters Lockdown After Officials Confirm Blasts As Terrorist Acts

Brussels is in a state of lockdown after a series of explosions at the city’s airport and a metro subway station; the airport attack is thought to have killed at least 13, while the subway attack is thought to have killed 15. Many more were wounded at both scenes.

The nation’s federal prosecutor Fredere Van Leeuw confirmed the twin blasts at the Zaventem airport and the singular explosion at Maelbeek station were coordinated terrorist acts. His office has opened a criminal investigation into the attacks.
Belgium’s crisis centre authority has issued warnings to citizens to stay put, and has advised all public transport has been suspended.

Footage has been posted to social media showing the aftermath of the blast above ground, and of passengers escaping the metro system afterwards.

As the nation stays at a maximum terror-alert level, leaders from around the world including Malcolm Turnbull have shared their condolences to the Belgian people while damning the attacks.

“I express my full solidarity with the Belgian people. All of Europe has been hit by this attack.”

“Europe has Brussels in its heart and mind.”

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

We’ll update this story as it develops.
