Australian Party leader Bob Katter has released a campaign ad “accusing” Queensland’s LNP leader, Campbell Newman, of supporting Federal legislation to legalise same-sex marriage. The voice over asks: “How well do you really know Campbell Newman? Do you really think he will stand up for your family values? Do you really think he will stand up to the Greens and other minority groups? Then think again. The LNP leader supports gay marriage just like Greens leader Bob Brown.”

This kind of “gay hysteria” is so hilariously outdated that the spot seems more like a parody of an ad from a ultra conservative bygone era (vintage Joh Bjelke-Petersen, maybe).
This is just the latest chapter in Bob Katter’s colourful history of publicly expressed anti-gay sentiments. The LGBT community, including Katter’s half-brother Carl Katter, have blasted the ad for its insensitivity, and according to reports the Australian Party has received threatening phone calls since the ads have been running.
