Billy Crystal’s Tribute To Robin Williams Is Touching, Poignant, Wonderful

We know we’ve already covered quite a few of the magnificent, heartbreaking tributes to the man known as Robin Williams in the days following his untimely passing. Maybe there’s been too many – at what point should we stop? Maybe there’s been not enough – how can there ever be enough words to adequately thank him for everything?

But maybe, if all else fails, this tribute from Williams’ close friend Billy Crystal, aired during today’s Emmy ceremony is exactly the kind of personal, heartfelt performance needed to put a somber full stop at the end of this particular book – one that none of us ever wanted to end.

With so much controversy surrounding In Memoriam tributes at previous Emmy ceremonies, broadcaster NBC would have been keen to nail this one in particular. Safe to say, they did. Well and truly.
The one (and only) criticism that can be levelled at it is that they censored the final punchline from the clip of Robin Williams’ iconic 1986 stand-up special Live at the Met.
But if all that does is make us all run out to rewatch the real version, in all its vulgar, sweary glory, then, shit, we’re all the better for it.
