The Greens Have Issued A Statement After Anab Mohamud Was Badly Assaulted Outside Poof Doof

Anab Mohamud

Victorian Greens councillor Anab Mohamud was violently assaulted outside South Yarra nightclub Poof Doof, after allegedly entering a brawl with a trans woman. The Greens have now issued a statement in response, emphasising they “do not condone violence”.

On May 10, it was reported that Mohamud was attacked outside the popular gay nightclub. The Greens councillor sustained serious facial injuries, including eye damage and significant blood loss, that left her hospitalised for days.

Following the assault, there have been multiple, contradicting witness accounts on what happened that night. According to one police statement, it is alleged that Mohamud yelled homophobic and transphobic slurs at the woman who assaulted her.

In a statement, the Victorian Greens said it is their understanding that “the version of events reported in the media has been contradicted by subsequent police witness statements.”

“These contradictory witness statements are yet to be resolved by police and we therefore remain uncertain about the reliability of what has been reported,” the statement read.

The Greens party also reassured community members that they support LGBTIQA+ people, as well as other marginalised communities.

“The Victorian Greens would like to emphasise that we do not condone violence or abuse in any form and condemn this vicious assault on a woman of colour,” the statement continued.

“The Victorian Greens want to assure all members of our diverse community, including people of colour and LGBTIQA+ people, that we are with you, and will always fight discrimination, bigotry and abuse in all its forms.

“The Victorian Greens oppose attempts by some to pit two marginalised communities against one another.”

Mohamed has taken a leave of absence while she recovers.
