A Queensland man who died after allegedly falling into an operating woodchipper machine is now having his death investigated as suspicious by police.

54-year-old Bruce Saunders reportedly fell into the machine back on a rural property in Gympie in November 2017, an incident which was at the time described as “just a tragic accident” with “no suggestion of foul play“.

Now however, police have launched an investigation after a coronial inquest led detectives to believe that the death is suspicious, with officers since raiding the property 150km north of Brisbane and removing “several items of interest”.

The Gympie Criminal Investigation Branch has taken over the case from QLD Workplace Health and Safety and are joined by homicide detectives in the investigation.

Mr Saunders was with two other men at the time of the incident, helping the property owner clear a driveway with a hired woodchipper when the two friends discovered his body inside the machine. The property owner was not present at the time and anyone with any information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
