$5 Homebrand Plonk Beats The Fancy Stuff To Claim Oz ‘Wine Of The Year’ Nod

We wonder what goes through a wine expert’s mind when they’re presented with a cracker drop at a bargain-bin price: how do sommeliers reconcile all of those blind tastings, spit buckets, and masses of rote memorisation with stupidly good discount plonk?

We imagine the folks over at Winestate are having the same thoughts right now, ’cause they’ve just named a $5 Coles-brand cleanskin shiraz the best bottle available under $20. From nearly 10,000 entries, that affordable tipple was judged by experts including Wolf bloody Blass to be best-in-class / best-in-glass.

The magazine officially heralded the Big & Bold Shiraz 2015 at today’s award ceremony in Adelaide, adding to some fifty awards no-frills bottles from Liquorland, Vintage Cellars and First Choice have accumulated in the past year.

Described by Liquorland as having “bright berry fruit characters both on the nose and palate,” the red is actually produced by Victoria’s McPherson Wines, and it’s one of many sippers the supermarket chain has unveiled in the past couple of years.

This whole deal has notes of the time a US $2 bottle of Charles Shaw wine – aka Two-Buck Chuck – was honoured as the best chardonnay California had to offer. We’re totally here for stellar wine at rock-bottom prices, tbh.

Salud, friendos.
