We Made Our Black Metal Fan Boi Trade His Tunes With The 70s Cult Girl

We all share a deep love of music here at P.TV, and the range of genres we collectively listen to is so wide it’s almost dizzying.

To share that love around, we’ve decided to start swapping playlists to appreciate each other’s tastes and give our thoughts on the selected tracks, but more likely, to brutally rag on them.

We’ll probably do it weekly and with different staff, but first up, I make Mel listen to some enormous riffs and pummelling black metal.

Crowbar – The Lasting Dose

Here’s my thing with death metal or whatever metal this is – why does everything have to be SO intense? Like calm down pal, life’s ok and you don’t need to be so heckers about your “apathy” and “the things you’ve done”.

I feel stressed listening to this. How is this a good time for you, Matt? I’m tired and also have mild anxiety in my chest right now.

Drab Majesty – Cold Souls

This was actually so good, IMO. Might even make it into my weekly playlist. It had a really dreamy vibe to it, I would maaaybe prefer a different vocal melody? How rude of me. But the instrumental bit (wow, can you tell I’m not a Music Editor or WHAT) was phenom and I liked the overall vibe.

Panopticon – En hvit ravns død

Well fuck, Matt. This was the absolute worst. What is even the point of this song? I could get a bunch of strong, fast babies, put them in front of some drums, give one of them a guitar and then just say “make some angry noise and one of you yell a lot in a deep man’s voice” and that would be this song.

This is the worst thing on your list and probably the entire world.

Hell to Pay – Thrive

Here’s what I’m going to do with this terrifying, loud, aggressive death metal track. I’m going to bank it in case my boyfriend does something stupid and makes me mad, forgive him for that, wait a week, then enact my revenge by putting noise-cancelling headphones on him when he’s asleep and blasting this through them at full volume.

That is all this song is good for.

Iceage – Catch It

OOF. Into this! This is a sexy as hell choooooon Matthew! I’m adding this to my playlist for sure. I would have sex to this song 100/10 percent and I think everyone else who has a lil squizzly squizzerton of it would agree.

It’s moody and a bit dark, but also really hits you right in the feels zone.

Ok, my turn to listen to Mel’s selection.

(Sandy) Alex G – Proud

I haven’t heard a heap of old mate Alex G‘s stuff, but everything I have heard I’ve quite liked. This song in particular is pretty chill. I’m into it. I particularly dig the little piano part in the bridge there.

To me, this is a great song to have on a campfire playlist or something. I also feel the ram in the album art is pretty flash, too. He sure is a majestic little fella.

The Psychedelic Furs – Love My Way

I’ve definitely heard this song before. It’s alright. Lot’s of catchy new wave vibes floating around in there, which I love.

Probably not something that I’d go out of my way to listen to, but I wouldn’t complain if it came on, you know? For some reason I can picture myself doing taxes to this song.

Spank Rock – Cool Shit

“I was at the cool shit doing cool shit” is the kind of lyric that gives me the shits. Not that I have anything against nonsense lyrics, I listen to plenty of music that makes no sense, but something about this song annoys the fuck out of me.

The singer then goes on to state, “and you know I do it better,” without actually detailing where the cool shit was at and what it was that he was actually doing. A bold claim, but utterly baseless.

There’s not much else going for this track musically, it’s pretty minimal. Needs more texturing I reckon. 3/10 would not do my taxes to this song.

Kurt Vile – Pretty Pimpin

Fuck yeah, Kurt Vile owns. I’m yet to find anyone who actively dislikes his music because honestly, he’s a fantastic songwriter. Simple as that.

This was actually the first song of his that lead me to pursue more of his work. Real chill, super catchy stuff. The subtle synths that kick in and out towards the end get me every damn time. Bueno.

Steely Dan – Reelin’ In The Years

Oh hell yeah, Mel, this is the shit. Are you reelin’ in the goddamn years? Hooo MAMA.

I may love me some heavy music, but no sane person can go past a bit of Steely Dan, you know? What an absolute classic tune. Something about these smooth 70s vibes just makes me wanna tuck in my shirt and wear a nice belt. Feels good, man.
