Kanye West has teamed up with Ruth Hogben – one of my favourite fashion filmmakers for her incredible work with Gareth Pugh – for the video for ‘Lost In The World’, a belated single release from his fifth opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Hogben’s strobe-laden black and white recalls West’s neon typography fetish for his ‘All Of The Lights’ video, yet this short definitely defies what you’d expect from a popular rap aesthetic with a dark, visceral experience that cuts as quick as it does deep, and does a good job of recalling the song’s performance in a live context. Oh, and Justin Vernon guests on the track, but almost two years on from its initial release you probably already knew that.
