Brooklyn quintet Apache Beat have garnered a substantial amount of press from just two 7 inches (“Tropics” and “Blood Thrills”) and a live reputation staked on the banshee howl and interpretative dance moves of front woman Ilirjana Alushaj.
Maybe it’s because they have friends in high places. Their cleverly titled debut LP Last Chants boasts members of The Rapture, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Chairlift and Lightspeed Champion while their latest single ‘Your Powers Are Magic’ was Produced and Mixed by Sonic Youth collaborators Martin Bisi and John Agnello. For those familiar with Apache Beat’s previous work ‘Your Powers Are Magic’ offers a more refined take on their swirling, propulsive and snarling brand of afro-pop. It’s the track blasting in your convertible when a peyote bender in the desert goes awry. Top down, off the rails and cops in tow. That is to say, it’s fucking awesome.
