Soul legend and renowned hellraiser Etta James has died at 73 after losing her battle with Leukemia.
Best known for her raw, tender vocal performance on ageless torch song “At Last” James was as famous for her turbulent personal life as she was for her contribution to rhythm and blues. She battled drug addiction and weight problems following her early success with Chess Records, before making a comeback in 1989 when she signed with Island Records and released the album, The Seven Year Itch.
Despite her personal grievances there’s no question about how she’ll be remembered.
