I made a playlist of songs by Australians because Australia Day is just around the corner and we like to commemorate the holiday with tenuously linked content comprising anything with a homegrown theme.
Instead of spending hours genre-hopping and researching to make sure I covered every corner of the Australian songwriting and music-making landscape and make everyone happy, I decided to go selfish. These are just great songs that I really like. A bunch of old stuff (“Almost With You” by The Church still makes me weep every time), radio hits (“Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia), classics (Divinyls – “Science Fiction”) and a lot of wonderful new stuff (Blank Realm’s Grassed Inn is the best album I’ve heard so far this year). Of course, there’s a few Legend Status songs like Daryl Braithwaite’s “The Horses” and Yothu Yindu’s “Djapana” in there, because they’ve got to be.
