Mayer Hawthorne Answers Food Related Questions

We recently had the opportunity to interview blue-eyed soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne (who is also a producer, songwriter, arranger, audio engineer, DJ, rapper, multi-instrumentalist and known Snoop Dogg affiliate) but we were a tired of the same old “what are you working on?…who inspires you?” line of questioning, so we said: Hey Mayer, can we just talk eating? He said okay.

Pedestrian You love eating. What is the most memorable meal you have eaten when in Australia?
Mayer Hawthorne I had some awesome Italian food from Sorrento in Perth. The owner, “Mama”, was standing outside when we walked by and said “why would you want to go to the wrong restaurant?”. We couldn’t argue with her.

P Many singers like to drink something before going on stage – to lubricate the vocal cords. Do you have a preference for a pre-performance beverage? If so, what is it?
MH Henny (Hennessy cognac) and Gingerale. It never fails.

P What are the most delicious items on your rider?
MH I keep the rider pretty simple, but I always have peanut butter and jelly on there.

P Which of these do you prefer and why: Peanut Butter or Peanut Butter Wolf?
MH Peanut butter is on my backstage rider, but Peanut Butter Wolf gave me my first record deal and he really believes in me as an artist. I’ll always be extremely thankful for that.

P If your new album was a meal what would it be?
MH I guess it would be some kind of casserole. The album is a blend of a lot of different styles. It’s still very soulful, but there’s some Brit Pop and Yacht Rock thrown in there for good measure.

P Do you have any tasty collaborations coming up?
MH I’ve got a song with French producer Sebastian coming out soon. And I’ve got a new track with Snoop Dogg for my album that I’m definitely excited about.
