Lorde Reveals Relatable AF “Drunk Girl” Story Behind New Banger ‘Green Light’

Let’s first get one thing out of the way. Kiwi pop angel Lorde’s breathtaking new single ‘Green Light’ is an absolute game changer.
An unprecedented kaleidoscopic take on modern pop music that carries Ella’s distinct and eternally impressive song-crafting ability to its exciting next stage, it’s a straight fire hit and I refuse to stop listening to it on repeat, maybe forever.
Written alongside Jack Antonoff (you might know him as Lena Dunham’s boo, or from his Bleachers project) and longstanding collaborator Joel Little, the first single from her upcoming second LP Melodrama, ‘Green Light’ speaks of the raw intensity and near-exhilarating recklessness that immediately follows heartbreak.
Speaking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, Lorde revealed the persona that inspired such an approach:

“This is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild.”

Ella also jumped on the blower with Straya’s own Ben & Liam from Triple J’s Breakfast, touching a bit more on the whole heartbreak shemozzle:

“It’s a heartbreak-based song, a scorched earth type number. The song is not so much about the heartbreak but about ‘How am I going to dance my way through this and be OK tomorrow morning? I might not be OK right now but I will be soon. I’m going to get that Green Light and when I do, it’s going to be the greatest’.”

Look, heartbreak is never fun, but if it results in spicy bangers as dang good as ‘Green Light’, I’m suddenly all for it.

Also, if like me you’re stinging for a bit of Nu Lorde IRL, she did tease an imminent local tour saying, “I will definitely, definitely be coming Down Under quite a bit sooner than people think. So watch this space, mate!”
Righto, I’ll just say it. If Lorde isn’t announced on the forthcoming Splendour in the Grass lineup, this writer will resign in disgrace.
‘Melodrama’ is expected to drop this winter.
