Green Day Say Album Inspo Came From Seeing A ‘Black Lives Matter’ Protest

In a new interview with NME, Green Day‘s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong has spoke out about the inspiration for their new “political” album, ‘Revolution Radio’.
While the first single ‘Bang Bang‘, which was released earlier this month, used lyrics such as “Daddy’s little psycho” and “a modern day Romeo” to describe a young mass shooter, Armstrong says the album came as inspiration to him after he had to wait in traffic because of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests in Ferguson.

“I was in a car coming from Brooklyn to Manhattan and there was these protesters for Ferguson holding up traffic all the way back across the bridge.”

I got to where I was staying at and I could see on 8th avenue there was all the protesters out there and I was just looking out and I wrote about it the day after.

I walked out and marched with people a little bit but I was mostly kind of observing and seeing what was happening.

It’s a trip to watch people just completely rebel against the old order or whatever you want to call it and get to something that’s more pure.

There was this controlled chaos that was going on and it was happening all over the country. People don’t want to feel obsolete.”

Oooooooookay.
People are marching for their lives, but being able to make the decision to sit back and ‘observe’ in order to use a minority group’s grief as pop music content is so super cool too … we guess.
Armstrong has also said to Kerrang! that ‘Revolution Radio’ reflects the current US political landscape, specifically the “fear” and “anger” that exists in America because of Donald Trump‘s presidential candidacy.
So, umm, that’s *three* very very big, very very important and very very different political and social issues. All at once. All explored and covered in one single album. That’s quite a lot of complex topics, isn’t it.
But okay – carry on, Green Day. Carry on.
‘Revolution Radio is dropping on October 7th, 2016.
