Gerard Way Teases New “Kinda Heavy” Music So Guess 2019 Is The Year Of Emo

Buckle up with your finest studded black belt folks, because 2019’s going to be a red hot one full of eyeliner-heavy emo now that Gerard Way has confirmed he’s been penning down a bunch of new music.

In his annual write up of the year that was (because someone’s clearly missing LiveJournal), Gerard mused about the production of the upcoming adaptation of his comic book series, The Umbrella Academy, favourite gigs he’s been to that year, and the fact that he spent every Friday of the last year writing and making music.

The man’s apparently got a stack of demos done and dusted (!!!) which is extremely good news to all of you like me who have simply refused to leave their mid-00s emo phase.

We’ve already seen the fruits of his efforts through ‘Baby, I’m A Haunted House‘ released on Halloween, ‘Getting Down The Germs‘ that he put out in November, and ‘Dasher‘ from December, but there’s apparently more on the way.

2018 was a dark year full of black magic in my opinion, so it got me thinking about witches again. I was inspired to buy this mask because I had just written a song called ‘I Am The Hag’, which I haven’t finished yet. It’s kind of heavy. Maybe I’ll release it in 2019.

Considering ‘Getting Down With The Germs‘ sounds more like The Dandy Warhols than it does the early thrashy horror emo of My Chemical Romance, I’m going to hedge a bet that a new track that’s “kind of heavy” and about witches (!!!) is going to be the style of Gerard Way’s music that enchanted a lot of us when we first encountered the theatrical emo king.

While Gerard Way is still being quite coy and cryptic about when exactly he’ll drop ‘I Am The Hag‘ we’re still about to be deeply blessed with the first season of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix in February.

Until he releases new music, feel free to lean into your best 2005 self and listen back to the MCR discography and try to resist the urge to give yourself a home haircut and black dye job.
