Judging from their single-minded moniker and the proliferation of attractive ladies in their videos, it’s safe to assume that San Francisco duo Girls have a genuine love of the fairer sex. Of course, this could all be a ploy to bed jailbait of the Last Night’s Party ilk, but their jams are so damn transcendent we could never accuse these DIY weirdos of musical dalliance.
There’s an earthiness here that Girls’ lo-fi contemporaries (Vivian Girls, Japandroids, Wavves) only hint at, and to be honest, that makes all the difference. The murky enunciation of frontman Christopher Owens provides the perfect foil for the band’s rollicking surf-punk jams and much like the best night of your life is all too fleeting, not quite as you remembered and imbued with a quiet magic that stays with you long after you’ve closed your eyes.
Standout track “Lust For Life” reduces existence to a shopping list of wishes (suntan, pizza, bottle of wine, beach house) and though it initially sounds trivial, I’m starting to think that’s really all it takes to make us happy in this fucked up world. That and Girls on loop of course. Say hello the Summer of making shit happen.
