Ed Sheeran – whose talent for enraging people at the drop of a hat is second to none – won the Grammy today for Best Pop Solo Performance, and people are raging fucking mad.
It was for ‘Shape of You‘, because of course it was. That song will haunt me in my grave.
He beat out Kelly Clarkson (‘Love So Soft‘), Kesha (‘Praying‘), Lady Gaga (‘Million Reasons‘) and P!nk (‘What About Us‘) for the win, four incredible tracks from women at the top of their game that require a powerhouse set of lungs to perform. In fact, Kesha hit a note so high in ‘Praying’ – an F6 – that reactions were spawned by the thousand.

Kesha, Lady Gaga and P!nk all gave phenomenal performances at the Grammys this year, while Sheeran notably wasn’t even at Madison Square Garden to collect his award.
TBH? People are extraordinarily mad about his win (and Kesha’s loss), and not without reason.

Lady Gaga wrote Million Reasons in a healing process to recover from a severe heartbreak. Kesha wrote Praying after being through her literal worst nightmare. Ed Sheeran wrote Shape Of You about a club girl he was horny for. Congratulations Recording Academy. Thank you for this.

Naturally, Ed Sheeran wins with a Sia/TLC rip-off over four deserving women who all sang their faces off. #Grammys

Watching #TheGrammys and see P!nk, Ke$ha, Gaga, and Kelly nominated in a single category and think WOW what an amazing selection of powerhouses!! Then…Ed Sheeran wins. 😑 SIGH pic.twitter.com/iN472HO0nQ

After surviving years of abuse at the hands of a man who allegedly called her a “fat fucking refrigerator,” Kesha released a beautiful, career-defining song about undeserved forgiveness. But the Grammys chose to award the song where a man sings “I’m in love with the shape of you”

Earlier this month The Grammys described Million Reasons as “introspective and impactful” and Shape Of You as “catchy and inescapable”. Tonight The Grammys awarded “catchy and inescapable” over “introspective and impactful”. This pretty much sums up the academy’s ideals in music. pic.twitter.com/TmwySs2LBv

Despite the Grammys being a huge indicator of artistic clout, they’ve never been beyond questioning, and frequently fuck it all up. Remember last year, when Adele basically apologised to Beyoncé for winning Album of the Year? Ugh, neither.
None of this is to say that ‘Shape of You’ isn’t a tune. It is, however you feel about old mate Sheeran. But come the fuck on, Recording Academy.
