Lady Gaga Tells Her Fans To Back Off Ed Sheeran After He Quits Twitter

Lady Gaga has called for her fans to back the hell off Ed Sheeran, after the singer revealed he’d quit Twitter thanks to constant online abuse and hinted that it had something to do with Lady Gaga’s fanbase.

In an interview with The Sun, Sheeran said that he’d “come off Twitter completely” because there was “nothing but people saying mean things.”

“One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it,” he said. “The headfuck for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”

He didn’t say where the abuse was coming from, exactly – and anyone who’s spent any time online knows it’s literally teaming with people ready to tell you you’re a waste of goddamn oxygen – but did drop this line about Lady Gaga.

“Lady Gaga’s fanbase read an interview in which they assumed I was talking about her and they all fucking hate. And it wasn’t anything to do with that at all. So I think Twitter gets on a massive steam roll of assuming things and then you get in the shit.”

The interview in question was with Radio Beats 1 back in January, where he talked about his approach to working on new music.

“I do not want to be the kind of artist who has had two successful albums and then feels invincible. I have to know when to listen to people, or I’ll end up like those artists you’ve interviewed in recent years. You’ve seen them become the biggest artists in the world, and then suddenly they will say, “I know everything!” And just after, they are no longer at the top. The smartest thing to do is listen to people who know I do not want to do the Super Bowl years later, after my biggest success, just to prove I’m still relevant.”

He didn’t mention Lady Gaga specifically, but it did kinda sound like he was shading her, given that she was the most recent artist to perform at the Super Bowl and is definitely, ever-so-slightly past her mega-hit monster years.

But now Gaga has given a public shout-out to Sheeran, asking “people on the internet” to stop being such vile creatures to one another all the dang time.

“What an incredible talented artist I LOVE ED @edsheeran deserves all our love and respect like all humans do,” she wrote. “I wish all people on the internet would be positive and loving and apart of creating an online community that is kind and empowering, not hateful and mean. No reason to tear down an artist simply because they are on top. Work harder to be kinder everybody. That should be your first duty to humanity.”

The *slightly* awkward thing here is that Gaga tagged a fan account instead of Sheeran’s actual account (it’s @teddysphotos, FWIW), but hey – the intention’s there.

Sheeran notably took a break from social media altogether at the end of 2015, saying that he was finding himself “seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes.”

He only reappeared when it was time to start promoting his latest album ÷ a full year later.

It looks like this time, however, he’s just backing off Twitter – ya boy’s still posting on the gram.
