Devo founder Mark Mothersbaugh is originally from Akron, Ohio but during the New Wave halcyon days he spent heaps of time partying with celebrities in New York City. Like this one night at Studio 54 when he was on a double date with Andy Warhol and Michael Jackson and Michael offered him angel dust.
Dose Nation is a website dedicated to drugs (illicit and legal) and peripheral drug-related topics such as ‘trippy videos’; so it’s a good source of information on new Macgyver-y ways of making bongs out of a toothpick and a human hair, or youtube tutorials of how LSD affects the brain, details about the latest international drug bust and the latest in celebrity pharmaceutical scandals. They happened upon Motherbaugh’s recent interview with the Big Issue Scotland:
“The only time in my life I smoked angel dust was by accident and it was on a double date with Andy Warhol and Michael Jackson,” laughs Mothersbaugh. “We all went to Studio 54 and people were passing drugs all over the place.
“Michael Jackson had just finished doing the movie The Wiz and still looked like Michael Jackson back then — he had an Afro and he was still black. He passed me a joint and I thought, well OK, we don’t have marijuana in Ohio so I’ll try it.”
Minutes later Mothersbaugh found himself on the dancefloor as pillars of light were swirling around “like weedcutters” knocking people over and cutting them up. He turned to his date in horror, only to hear her say: “You didn’t smoke any of that angel dust did you?”
Everyone smoked PCP once, assuming it was weed because it was being passed in a pipe or joint but was corrected later. Like all those dudes during their university days that thought they were getting a blow job from a girl but it was actually from a guy with longish hair. C’est la vie.
