Everybody loves Darude because he reminds us of the carefree halcyon days of the 90s, when 9/11 hadn’t happened yet and the only thing we world cared about was partying in sweaty European clubs with constant strobe lighting. At least, I think that’s how things were.
But because we live in a post-truth world, we have merely assumed that his hit song ‘Sandstorm’, which has undergone something of a meme renaissance over the past few years, was based on some facet of reality. Was Darude trapped in a sandstorm? Was the experience somewhat akin to that intoxicating trance beat?
No. In a Reddit AMA last night, Darude – whose real name is Ville Virtanen, confirmed that he has never actually experienced a sandstorm at all.
He tries to claim a dust devil is in any way like a sandstorm (it clearly isn’t), and makes the laughable suggestion that he just missed a sandstorm in Arizona.
Shameful. Next you’ll be telling me Cher never actually turned back time.
