Here’s An App Called ‘Doomba’ Which Turns Your Living Room Into A Game

If you’ve ever wanted to see what your robot vacuum cleaner sees whilst also slaying hordes of demons, you’re in bloody luck, folks. A game developer has created a tool which converts Roomba cleaning routes into playable Doom maps.

Created by Rich Whitehouse, the aptly named, Doomba, takes the map data of your home collected by your Roomba and uses it to create the maps. In other words, you can slay waves of demons in a Doom-ified version of your very own living room, which, to me, is dope as hell (pun absolutely fucking intended).

I’m not entirely sure, but it’s implied that the app does all the heavy lifting in terms of adding textures (or, uh, wallpapers?) and random props to the map, making it playable straight away.

Old mate’s description of the app on his blog is pretty funny, too.

I soon realized that there was a clear opportunity to serve the Dark Lord by conceiving a plethora of unholy algorithms in service to one of the finest works ever created in his name. Simultaneously, I would be able to unleash a truly terrible pun to plague humankind. Now, the fruit of my labor is born.

I bring forth DOOMBA, a half-goat, half-script creature, with native binary backing for the expensive parts, to be offered in place of my firstborn on this fine Christmas Eve.

That’s some incredibly black metal shit and I’m into it. But at the same time, this could also be seen as a very clever advertising activity, given the app is a plugin for Whitehouse’s other, more useful app, Noesis, which converts model, image, and animation formats used in game development.

You can read more about how Doomba works here, where you can also download it if you’re keen. It was made specifically for the Roomba 980, but Whitehouse reckons it’ll work for most robot vacuum cleaners.
