It looks like DC’s Birds of Prey is finally taking off after years of prepping with Aussie actor and producer Margot Robbie sharing some of her visions for the action flick.
Birds of Prey is based on the comic books series about a team of superheroes and antiheroes across Gotham City and Metropolis. The team has varied throughout the years but you’ve got Black Canary, Vixen, Power Girl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Hawkgirl, and Huntress. These characters are all currently rumoured to appear in the ginormous film adaption while Batgirl is said to be a sure thing.
Robbie’s performance as Quinn in Suicide Squad was easily one of the best things about it, no matter your thoughts about the movie.
Back in April it was revealed that Cathy Yan had signed on as director after much championing from Robbie. Yan is the first Asian woman to direct a superhero film and third female director overall for DC, joining Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins.
In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment about her latest flick Terminal, Robbie shared how she’s determined to have a diverse cast on the set of Birds of Prey.
“Yep, yes exactly, real life isn’t so one specific image,” Robbie said. “We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.”
Per Collider, Robbie first pitched the comic book series about Quinn and her mates to Warner Bros. while she was on the set of Suicide Squad because “She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”
Along with having a female director, the script was also written by Christina Hodson, the brains behind the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee and the 2016 horror thriller Shut In starring Naomi Watts.
The actor also confirmed to Yahoo that the film’s costume department is currently working on some new looks for Quinn. As Robbie said, “There will be new Halloween costumes out there, one day.”
It’s still extremely early days for the film but production is keen to kick off early 2019.
